The Hair That Just Lies There
You have tried volumising shampoos, thickening sprays, root-lifting mousses, and blowouts that look great for four hours before the weight of your hair reasserts itself. Some products add the illusion of volume briefly before weighing your hair down as they dry. Others give lift at the root while the mid-lengths and ends look flat and thin. Volumising shampoos and conditioners typically work through two mechanisms: the removal of heavy oils and silicones that weigh hair down (which is why they often feel stripping), and the deposition of lightweight polymers that swell the hair shaft slightly or add surface texture to increase friction between strands. On very fine hair, the added polymer coating often becomes the thing that weighs the hair down. The cycle most fine-haired women experience: volumising shampoo strips the hair, creating temporary lift. Conditioner is needed to counteract the dryness. The conditioner weighs the hair down. The hair becomes progressively drier and more prone to breakage with each iteration.
Structural Thickening: The Alternative That Works
Structural thickening means increasing the actual diameter of each hair strand by improving its internal composition. A strand that is thicker — even by a fraction of a micrometre — produces measurably more volume when it stands away from adjacent strands, holds a shape more effectively, and contributes more to the overall density and fullness of the hair. Coconut milk's lauric acid achieves exactly this. By penetrating the hair shaft and filling gaps in the protein cortex, it increases the strand's internal density and diameter. Research has documented increases in strand diameter with consistent coconut milk use — a small change per strand that, multiplied across the full head, translates to visible and tactile difference in fullness and body.
What This Means for Asian and Fine Hair
East Asian hair is typically characterised by a round cross-sectional profile and a flat, smooth cuticle that can make it particularly prone to lying flat without natural texture or lift. For these hair types, structural thickening is genuinely transformative because the improvement in strand diameter directly addresses the physical reason the hair lacks body. Aloe vera's contribution is the smoother, more polished cuticle that allows light to reflect consistently — creating the appearance of healthy, lustrous volume rather than the dull flatness that accompanies stripped or damaged fine hair.
Long and Strong customers with fine and straight hair describe volume that accumulates progressively over weeks rather than appearing and disappearing wash by wash. By month two, ponytails are visibly thicker. Friends who know their hair ask about extensions. Hairdressers notice the change in density during cuts. This is what structural thickening looks like in practice: not a temporary lift, but a genuine and growing change in the substance and fullness of the hair.
